The roots have the central portion known as the medulla made up of the vascular tissue (inner xylem and outer phloem). The medulla is surrounded by the medullary parenchyma and delimited by the pericycle, a meristem which originates the secondary roots (ramifications). Externally to medulla lies the cortical portion formed of the endodermis (which surrounds the pericycle) and the cortical parenchyma. The covering of roots is known as the epidermis (with root hairs) and later substituted by the suberized (corky) periderm.
