“Chondros” signifies cartilage, “ictis” signifies fish (both from Greek); the name chondrichtians is for fishes by cartilaginous endoskeleton. The term osteichthyes comes from the subsistence of a bony endoskeleton in such fishes (“osteo” signify bone, from the Greek as well).
