During day, in the dry habitats the guard cells become flaccid and stomata close; simultaneously carbon dioxide is disallowed to pass in order to participate in the diurnal photosynthesis. Some plants from the dry regions solve this problem through the mechanism of the nocturnal carbon dioxide fixation. During night, when the water loss through the transpiration is lower, the stomata gets open, carbon dioxide enters and it gets stored in the parenchymal tissues. At the day, the stored gas is mobilized to be used in the photosynthesis.
