As the binding of neurotransmitters to postsynaptic receptors is reversible, after such neurochemicals execute their role they should be removed from the synaptic cleft. Neurotransmitters can then join to specific proteins which carry them back to the axon they came from in a procedure termed as neurotransmitter re-uptake. They can as well be destroyed by particular enzymes, such as acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme which destroys acetylcholine. Or they can just diffuse out of synaptic cleft.
