The major cells of connective tissue proper are the fibroblasts, cells which secrete the intercellular material. Such cells are the majority of cells of tissue. Fibroblasts later are converted into fibrocytes, mature cells with limited secretory role. The intercellular substance which fills the interstice is termed as interstitial matrix or simply matrix.
