Meninges are the membranes which enclose and protect the central nervous system (or CNS). Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid which separates the three layers which form the meninges and it consists of the functions of nutrient transport, mechanical protection and defense for the CNS. The cerebrospinal fluid fills and defends cavities of the brain and spinal cord.
