In mitosis one cell, for illustration, with 2n chromosomes, duplicates its chromosomal set and splits producing two other cells, each with 2n chromosomes also. In meiosis, one diploid cell (2n) duplicates its chromosomes as well; however four cells with n chromosomes are produced.
