Mechanism of apical dominance in plants
Explain the mechanism of the apical dominance within the plants? How can it be artificially removed?
Expert
Apical dominance is defined as the phenomenon through which high concentrations of the auxin because of the auxins from apical bud moving downward the stem hamper the growth of lateral buds of the plant. At the beginning of stem development the apical dominance results in the growth of the plant to be longitudinal (upwards) as the growth of lateral buds stays repressed. Since, the lateral buds become more distant from apex the concentration of the auxin within these buds lowers and shoots grow more easily. The growth of the tree branches can be stimulated avoiding the apical dominance through the removal of the apical bud.
