The neural impulse is transmitted all along the neuronal membrane via depolarization of consecutive neighboring areas. Whenever an area in the interior surface of the membrane is depolarized it becomes much positive in relation to the neighboring internal area. Therefore positive electrical charges (or ions) move towards this more negative area and voltage-gated sodium channels are activated and open. Action potential are then linearly propagates all along the membrane until close to the presynaptic area of the axon.
