Main functions of spleen-Total splenectomy
Write down the main functions of spleen? Why is a total splenectomy (or surgical removal of the spleen) compatible with life?
Expert
The spleen has various functions: it participates in destruction of old red blood cells; in it specialized leukocytes are matured; it aids the regeneration of hematopoietic tissue of bone marrow when essential; it can act as a spongelike organ to keep or release blood from or for circulation. Total splenectomy is not unsuited with life as none of the functions of spleen are very important and at the same time exclusive of this organ.
