The hypophysis is divided in two portions: adenohypophysis, or anterior hypophysis, and neurohypophysis, or posterior hypophysis.

In adenohypophysis two hormones which act directly, the growth hormone (or GH) and the prolactin, and four tropic hormones, that is, hormones which regulate other endocrine glands, adrenocorticotropic hormone (or ACTH), the thyroid-stimulating hormone (or TSH), the luteinizing hormone (or LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (or FSH) are produced.

The neurohypohysis releases and stores two hormones produced in hypothalamus, oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone (or ADH, vasopressin).
