Lysosomes form heterophagic and autophagic digestion: Autophagic digestion by digesting residual substances from cellular metabolism; heterophagic digestion by digesting the substances which enter the cell. Lysosomes enfold the substances to be degraded making digestive or residual vacuoles, which later migrate toward the plasma membrane fusing with it and liberating (that is, exocytosis) the digested material to the external.
