kidneys controlling the blood volume
How do kidneys control the volume of blood? How the blood volume of the body is related to the arterial pressure?
Expert
The kidneys and the hormones which act on them are the major physiological regulators of total blood volume of body. Since, more water is reabsorbed in the nephron tubules, more volume of the blood increases; as more water is secreted in the urine, more the blood volume lowers. The blood volume has a direct relation to the blood pressure. Blood pressure rises when the blood volume rises and it lowers when volume of the blood lowers. This states the reason why one of the main groups of antihypertensive drugs is the diuretics. Doctors generally prescribe diuretics for the hypertensive patients in order to secrete more water and hence, lower their blood pressure.
