In the majority of amphibian species, fecundation is external. This feature is very common to bony fishes as well and it exhibits that the reproductive system and the embryonic growth of amphibians are a heritage from the osteichthyes. Curiously though having external fecundation amphibian female and male copulate to stimulate the release of sperm and egg cells. This phenomenon doesn’t characterize internal fecundation as the gametes unite in water.
