The phylum Mollusca is classified into five main groups: pelecypods, or bivalves (that is, Bivalvia or Pelecypoda), comprises oysters, clams, mussels; gastropods (or Gastropoda), snails, sea slugs; cephalopods (or Cephalopoda), octopuses and squids, scaphopods (or Scaphopoda), tooth shells; Polyplacophora and chitons.
