Water vapour in the mid & upper troposphere absorbs infrared energy at discrete wavelengths. By using this information, water vapour can behave like a tracer of atmospheric circulation in the mid & upper troposphere. Generally dark regions on water vapour pictures are areas where the air is sinking & drying. Light colour regions are areas of going up motion and moisture.
