Describe the internal and external fragmentation in detail?

A multi-programmed system will usually perform more proficiently if it has a bigger level of multi-programming for a given set of processes. We can raise multi-programming level only by packing more processes to memory. To achieve this task we should decrease memory waste or fragmentation.

The system with variable size allocation units like multi partition scheme and segmentation suffer from the external fragmentation. The system with fixed size allocation like single partition scheme and paging suffer from the internal fragmentation.
