Increase in strength of muscle work is not attained through the increase in intensity of stimulation of each muscle fiber. Muscle fiber obeys an all-or-nothing rule, that is, its strength of contraction is only one and does not increase. Whenever, body desires to increase the strength of the muscle work a mechanism called as “spatial summation” takes place: new muscle fibers are hired besides the fibers which are already in action. Thus, strength of the muscle contraction increases only when there is increase in the number of active muscle cells.
