Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, participates in metabolism of the collagen and it is essential for the integrity of the blood capillaries.

Scurvy is disease caused by the scarcity of vitamin C. It is characterized by the tissue lesions in skin, nose, joints and lips. Scurvy, or scorbutus, was also recognized as sailors' disease since in maritime voyages of the past it was not general to obtain on board food which contained vitamin C, like citric fruits. So sailors became ill with scurvy.
