Hormones secreted by adrenal medulla and their functions
Explain which hormones are secreted by the adrenal medulla and their respective functions?
Expert
The medullary piece of the adrenals secretes hormones of the catecholamine set: adrenaline (also recognized as epinephrine) and noradrenaline (also recognized as norepinephrine). also their hormonal function, adrenaline and noradrenaline operate as neurotransmitters too. The neurons that employ them like neurotransmitters are termed adrenergic neurons. Adrenaline increases the glycogen splitting in glucose (glycogenolysis) so increasing glycemia and the basal metabolic pace of the Human body. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are discharged during conditions of risk (fightfight or flight response) and they increase the strength and rate of the heartbeat and collectively modulate the blood irrigation in a number of tissues by selective vasodilation and selective vasoconstriction. By vasodilation they enhance the blood supply to the muscles, the brain, and the heart and by vasoconstriction they decrease the blood supply to the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, the skin. Materials such as adrenaline plus noradrenaline which promote vasodilation or vasoconstriction are termed vasoactive substances.
