The medullary portion of adrenals release hormones of catecholamine group: adrenaline also called as epinephrine and noradrenaline, also called as norepinephrine. Besides their hormonal function, adrenaline and noradrenaline also act as neurotransmitters. The neurons which use them as neurotransmitters are termed as the adrenergic neurons. Adrenaline improves glycogen breaking into the glucose (glycogenolysis) therefore, increasing the glycemia and basal metabolic rate of body. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are liberated during the situations of danger and they intensify the strength and rate of heartbeat and selectively modulate the blood irrigation in some of the tissues by selective vasodilation and selective vasoconstriction. Through the vasodilation they increase the supply of the blood to brain, heart and muscles and the vasoconstriction they decrease the supply of blood to kidneys, skin and gastrointestinal tract. Substances such as adrenaline and noradrenaline which promote the vasodilation or vasoconstriction are known as vasoactive substances.
