The neurohypophysis secretes following hormones, the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin. Oxytocin is secreted in women for the period of delivery to enhance the strength and frequency of the uterine contractions and hence to help the baby’s delivery. In the lactation stage the baby’s sucking act on the mother’s nipples stimulates the production of oxytocin that then increases the secretion of milk by the mammary glands. ADH, or Vasopressin, participates in the water parameter of the body and so in the control of the blood pressure as it allows the desorption of free water through the renal tubules. The blood volume increases because water goes back to the circulation at that time.
