Monozygotic twins, also termed as identical twins, are such originated from one single fertilized ovum (thus from one single zygote); monozygotic twins are genetically the same, that is, they have similar genotypes and are essentially of similar sex. Dizygotic twins, also termed as fraternal twins, are such produced from two different ova fecundated by two distinct sperm cells; therefore they are not genetically the same and they are not essentially of similar sex.
