Default gateway or Gateway of Last Resort is a route employed by the router whenever no other known route exists to convey the IP packet. Known routes are existed in the routing table. Therefore, any route not recognized by the routing table is forwarded to default route. Each router that receives this packet will treat packet similar way, when the route is known; the packet will be forwarded to known route.
