Functionally the nervous system can be divided in somatic nervous system and visceral nervous system.

Somatic nervous system consists of the central and peripheral structures which creates voluntary control of efferences. Central and peripheral structures which participate in control of vegetative (unconscious) functions of body are included in concept of visceral nervous system. The efferent portion of visceral nervous system is called autonomic nervous system.
