The umbilical cord is a set of blood vessels which connect the fetus with placenta. In fetus, one boundary of the cord puts into the center of abdominal wall (that is, the later scar of this insertion is the umbilicus).

The function of the umbilical cord is to permit the transport of substances, gases, nutrients, and residuals, among the fetus and the mother’s body.
