Platelets, also recognized as thrombocytes, are fragments of the giant cells of bone marrow which is known as megakaryocytes. With their properties of adhesiveness and aggregation they perform a direct function in blood clotting and they also release substances which activate other hemostatic processes.

Thrombocytopenia is a clinical situation in that the platelet count of blood is lower than normal. In this condition the person becomes susceptible to hemorrhages.
