Expert
The epidermis is the outer layer of skin made up of epithelial tissue. In epidermis there are keratin-secreting cells (or keratinocytes). Keratin is an insoluble protein which impregnates the surface of skin giving protection and impermeability. In mammals, keratin as well forms the hairs.
The keratinized cells of skin surface build the corneal layer. These cells die and are constantly substituted by others.
