The epidermis refers to the outer layer of skin which is made up of epithelial tissue. In epidermis, there exist keratin-secreting cells also known as keratinocytes. Keratin is an insoluble protein which saturates the surface of the skin offering the protection and impermeability. Within the mammals keratin also makes the hairs. Keratinized cells of the surface of the skin form the corneal layer. These cells are consistently replaced by others.
