Packet switching refers to a digital networking communications approach that groups all the transmitted data, irrespective of the type, content, or the structure, into appropriate sized blocks, termed as packets. Packet switching attributes delivery of the variable bit rate data streams (sequences of the packets) over a shared network. When traversing the network adapters, switches, routers and the other network nodes, packets are buffered and queued, resulting in the variable delay and throughput depending upon the traffic load within the network.
