Expert
The pressure in the middle ear is maintained equal to the external ear due to a communicating duct between the pharynx called the auditory tube(or Eustachian tube) and the middle ear. When a person goes down a mountain the air pressure in the middle ear increases and it is essential to do some exercises, for example fake swallowing to force the pharyngeal orifice opening of the auditory tube to match the pressure again.
