Lichens are made by mutualist ecological interaction among algae and fungi or between fungi and cyanobacteria. In this ecological interaction, the fungi absorb water which is then employed by algae (cyanobacteria), and algae (cyanobacteria), as autotrophs, generate organic material in surplus to serve as a food for the fungi.
