Anemia is a low concentration of hemoglobin in the blood. The four main kinds of anemia are: nutrient-deficiency anemia, anemia caused by blood loss, hemolytic anemia and the aplastic anemia. Nutrient-deficiency anemia is caused by the dietary lack of basic nutrients for the production or functioning of red blood cells, such as iron (that is, iron deficiency anemia), vitamin B12 and folic acid. Anemia caused by the blood loss takes place in hemorrhagic conditions or in diseases such as hookworm disease and peptic ulcerations.

Hemolytic anemia is caused by extreme destruction of red blood cells, for illustration, in diseases such as malaria or in hypervolemic conditions (extreme water in blood which causes lysis of red blood cells).

Aplastic anemia takes place from deficiencies of the hematopoiesis and it occurs whenever the bone marrow is hurt by cancers from other tissues (or metastasis), by autoimmune diseases and by the intoxication from drugs (such as sulfas and anticonvulsants) or by chemical substances (such as benzene, paints, insecticides, herbicides and solvents in common). Various genetic diseases as well affect the bone marrow causing the aplastic anemia.
