Coleoptile refers to the first (one or more) aerial structure of the sprouting plant that emerges from the seed. It encircles the young stem and the first leaves, guarding them.
The top of coleoptile usually is the region in which the auxins are formed. If this region is eliminated, growth of the plant stops as the auxins are essential in order to promote the growth and tissue differentiation.
