Platelets, also termed as thrombocytes, are fragments of giant cells of the bone marrow termed as megakaryocytes. With their properties of adhesiveness and aggregation they a direct role in blood clotting and they as well release substances which activate other hemostatic processes. Thrombocytopenia is a clinical situation in which the platelet count of the blood is lower than the normal. In this condition the person becomes susceptible to hemorrhages.
