The acrosome is a structure which contains a vast number of digestive enzymes. It is situated in the anterior end of the sperm cell and it is created by the union of Golgi apparatus vesicles.

The purpose of the acrosome is to discharge its enzymes whenever the sperm cell meets the egg cell to split the external covering of the female gamete therefore making fecundation possible.
