Exchange of cells between mother and fetus
Justify the exchange of cells between mother and fetus through the placenta?
Expert
Under general conditions, there is not any passage of cells across the placenta for the duration of gestation. The placenta has a smooth mucosa separating the richly vascularized area in contact with mother’s endometrium from umbilical cord in contact with the fatal blood. This obstacle is called placental barrier. Even though permeable to a number of substances (selective permeability) the placental barrier prohibits the passage of cells.
