The placenta besides being the organ during which the exchange of substances between the mother and fetus is completed also has the role of secreting estrogen and progesterone to maintain a high level of these hormones at the time of  pregnancy. (The placenta still secretes other hormones such as human placental lactogen which act in the same way to the hypophyseal hormones which regulate reproduction, and HCG i.e. human chorionic gonadotropin.)
