Enzymes are proteins which are catalysts of the chemical reactions. From Chemistry, it is recognized that catalysts are non-consumable substances which decrease the activation energy essential for a chemical reaction to take place.

Enzymes are extremely specific to the reactions they catalyze. They are of much significance for life since most part of chemical reaction of the tissues and cells are catalyzed by enzymes. Devoid of enzymatic action, such reactions would not take place or would not occur in the requisite speed for the biological processes in which they contribute.
