Chromosomes include genes (that is, genetic information in the form of nucleotide sequences) which command the protein synthesis therefore controlling and regulating the activities of cell. In the nucleus of somatic cells of diploid beings each and every chromosome consists its correspondent homologous chromosome, both having alleles of the similar genes associated to similar functions. This takes place since one chromosome of one pair comes from the father and the other comes from the mother of individual. The chromosomes which form a pair with alleles of similar genes are termed as homologous chromosomes. In humans, there are 22 pairs of homologous chromosomes plus the pair of sex chromosomes (that is, the sex chromosomes are partly homologous).

The only human cells which do not contain homologous chromosomes are the gametes as during meiosis the homologous chromosomes are detached.
