The duties of data link layer are as described below:
a) Framing: It divides the stream of bits received to data units termed as frames.
b) Physical addressing: When frames are to be distributed to various systems on the network, data link layer adds a header to frame to define the sender and receiver.
c) Flow control: When the rate at which the data are absorbed by receiver is less than the rate produced in the sender, and then the Data link layer imposes a flow control method.
d) Error control: It is used for detecting and retransmitting damaged or lost frames and to prevent the duplication of frames. This is accomplished via a trailer added at the end of frame.
e) Access control: It is used to find out which device has control over the link at any specific time.
Broadcast domain: This is a logical region in a computer network where any computer joined to the network can directly transmit to some other computer in the domain without having to go via a routing device.
