An intron specifies to any nucleotide series in a gene that is taken away by RNA splicing to produce the final mature RNA product of a gene. The word intron specifies to both the DNA series in a gene, and the corresponding series in RNA transcripts. Introns are found in the genes of mainly organisms and a lot of viruses.

An exon can be specified to a series in DNA or its RNA transcript. In wide sense an exon is a nucleic acid series that is presented in the mature form of an RNA molecule.
