The address resolution protocol (ARP) is used in order to link the 32 bit IP address along with the 48 bit physical address, which is used by the host or the router in order to find the physical address of another host upon its network by sending the ARP query packet which involves the IP address of the receiver. The reverse address resolution protocol (RARP) enables the host to discover its Internet address if it knows only its physical address.
