The HCl gas is molecular HCl in the gaseous phase, HCl acid is HCl in the solution with water, and can be stated to be in the form H+ Cl-. (Otherwise, to be a pendant, H3O+ Cl- as technically protons doesn’t exist on their own in the solution). It is the dissociation of molecule into the constituent ions that gives an acid its properties.

On the physical level, HCl gas is a yellow or green gas and the HCl acid is a clear solution.
