The three major signs of diabetes mellitus are termed as the diabetic triad: polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia. The Polyuria is as excessive removal of urine; in diabetes it is caused by decreased water resorption in renal tubules due to raised osmolarity of the glomerular filtrate (caused by an excessive glucose). The Polydipsia is an exaggerated ingestion of water; the thirst is due to excessive water loss in the urine. The Polyphagia is an exaggerated ingestion of food caused by the deficiency in energy production by glucose-lacking cells.
