Describe the digestive functions of the liver?
Expert
Besides forming bile for discharge in the duodenum, the liver has other digestive functions. The venous network which absorbs nutrients from the guts, termed as mesenteric circulation, drains its blood content almost wholly to the hepatic portal vein. This vein irrigates the liver through absorbed material from digestion. Therefore the liver has the functions of processing, storing and inactivating nutrients.
The Glucose is polymerized into glycogen in liver; this organ as well stores numerous vitamins and iron absorbed in the intestine. Some significant metabolic molecules, such as albumin and clotting factors, are made up in the liver from amino acids of the diet. In liver ingested toxic substances, such as drugs and alcohol, are inactivated too.
