The epithelial tissues are categorized according to the shape of cells which form it (that is, epithelial cells might be cuboidal, columnar or squamous) and according to number of layers in which such cells are positioned in the tissue (that is, into simple or stratified).

The major kinds of epithelial tissues are simple cuboidal, simple squamous, simple columnar, stratified squamous and pseudostratified columnar (that is, resembling more than one layer however really having only one). There are as well stratified cuboidal and stratified columnar epithelia (or rare).
