Crossing over is the eventual exchange of the chromosomal fragments among homologous chromosomes. The phenomenon takes place in prophase I whenever homologous chromosomes are paired. Crossing over is of huge importance for biodiversity and evolution and as it gives recombination of alleles (that is, of various genes) linked in similar chromosome throughout cell division by meiosis.
