Plant cell vacuoles are cell structures which are delimited by membranes in which there is an aqueous solution which is made of different substances like carbohydrates and proteins. In the young plant cells many small vacuoles can be appeared; in the adult cells the most part of internal area of cell is occupied by the central vacuole.

The major function of the vacuoles is the osmotic balance of the intracellular space. They act as ‘an external space’ in the cell. Vacuoles absorb or liberate water in response to cellular metabolic necessities by rising or lowering the concentration of osmotic particles dissolved in cytosol.

Vacuoles also serve as a storage place for some substances. The membrane that delimits the vacuoles is called tonoplast, named after the osmotic function of the structure.
