Define mitochondria
Define mitochondria? What is the fundamental morphology of such organelles and in which cells can they can be found?
Expert
Mitochondria are the organelles in which the most significant portion of the cellular respiration takes place: the ATP production.
Mitochondria are organelles delimited by the two lipid membranes. The internal membrane invaginates to the inside of the organelle making cristae which delimitate the interior space termed as mitochondrial matrix and where mitochondrial DNA (or mtDNA), mitochondrial RNA (or mt RNA), respiratory enzymes and mitochondrial ribosomes can be found. Mitochondria are many in eukaryotic cells and they are even more plentiful in such cells which use more energy, like muscle cells. Since they have their own RNA, DNA and ribosomes, mitochondria can self-replicate.
